4 Tips for Attending In-Person Author Events

New self-publishing authors often find the idea of author events, such as book signings, readings, and meet-the-author conferences daunting. They may not know where to find events and be uncertain about what to bring to an event. Author events are one of the best tools self-publishing authors can use to connect with readers, and they present great opportunities to sell books.

1. Connect with Other Authors

While many self-publishing authors believe writing is a solo endeavor, marketing is best done with friends.

Local author groups, both in person and online, are an excellent way for authors to meet. They can keep authors apprised of local events and watch the author’s table at those events if they need to step away.

If an author can’t befriend other authors, then it is ideal for them to bring a helper during an author event that will last more than an hour so they can safely leave their tables.

2. Be Informed

Before the author event, the self-publishing author should reach out to the organizers and find out what is provided to the author. Most events give authors tables and chairs. Some provide table coverings.

Usually, authors need to bring their way of taking payments. Still, there can be exceptions to that rule, such as when the author event is held at a bookstore or when the payment for the table is a percentage of book sales, the venue may offer to handle cashiering.

Self-publishing authors should also bring food and snacks for themselves, a way to occupy themselves during downtime, nice pens to sign books, business cards so readers can find them online, and giveaway items or props to attract guests to their tables.

3. Book Sales

At most events, authors should have a cash box to make change for cash payments and a way to take credit and debit payments. There are many phone apps that self-publishing authors can download to accept electronic payments. Many event visitors don’t think to grab cash before visiting, so multiple payment systems increase sales opportunities.

Books and promotional items for sale should be clearly priced with stickers or signage.

When a book is sold, the author should offer to sign it for the buyer. Typically this is provided at no additional cost.

4. Book Display

How the self-publishing author displays the books at their table will depend on space, book number, and author preference.

If the author chose hardcover book printing, bookends are a great way to display books on a table.

Authors should be sure to have at least one or two copies of their book positioned to show off their custom book covers. Despite the common saying, readers still tend to choose books by their covers.

Self-publishing authors should be careful not to overfill their table to the point of being cluttered with book copies. It is helpful to bring additional books that can be stowed away for restocking to maintain a neat and organized appearance with which customers can easily interact.
