About this Book:

The Spirit of OEG: Naval Operations Analysts Reminisce extols the accomplishments of the truly unique group of brilliant people in the Operations Evaluation Group (OEG). Sixteen analysts reminisce about their salad days working on the cutting edge of the relatively new field of naval operations research. The Spirit of OEG is not about the bureaucracy and organization charts, but rather captures the esprit de corps of the characters that populated OEG. In The Spirit of OEG, you will read about the overriding importance of getting close to operations; notable analyses and the analysts who did them; how an OEG study revived queuing theory; how an OEG analyst challenged a famous admiral and thus gained his respect and confidence; how long division is sometimes sufficient math for good analysis; and how one analyst got the attention of a company that would not stop billing him. Dr. Phil DePoy wrote the Foreword to The Spirit of OEG.

About the Author:

Dr. Marvin Pokrant, the editor of The Spirit of OEG, was a naval operations research analyst for more than 20 years, with 15 years of that in the field. He served as the civilian operations analyst with U.S. Naval Forces, Central Command, for all of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Later, as Director of the Center for Naval Analyses’ Fleet Tactics and Capabilities Program, he oversaw many analysis projects that examined issues raised during Desert Storm. He spent most of the next four years researching and writing Desert Shield at Sea: What the Navy Really Did and Desert Storm at Sea: What the Navy Really Did, both published by Greenwood Press in 1999. Dr. Pokrant is currently writing a memoir tentatively titled Adventures of a Naval Operations Analyst.
