Harold Thrasher was born in Canadian, Texas, moving to Pampa, Texas with his parents when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Pampa High School in the fall of 1963. Upon graduation he went to work for the A.T.&S. F. Railroad in Clovis, New Mexico, where he and his wife have called their home ever since. He joined the United States Marines and started recruit training in September 1966. In March 1967, he was sent to South Vietnam to join his assigned unit which was already there. When asked about his college he attended, he always teases and says "The University of South Vietnam" the college of hard knocks. On May 10, 1967, he was wounded in action spending 18 days in the hospital then returned back to duty with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division to complete his 13 month tour of duty in South Vietnam.
