About this Book:
|
|
A nostalgic look at life in the Mississippi delta in the 1950s, Quiver River is a wholesome book that is appropriate for the whole family. True-to-life historical fiction, the action picks you up and carries you along through the mischief and struggles to grow up of a ten-year-old boy spending the summer on his granddaddy's sharecropping cotton farm.
"I felt like I was there, like it was happening to me," said Lacey W, a Carroll County librarian. “I was planning to read one chapter each night, but once I got started, I couldn’t put it down. When I got to the story of the bee tree, I accidently woke my daughter by screaming, ‘No, Paul! Surely you aren’t going to do that!’”
But I did.

Book Review:

Paul Henderson’s 185-page charmer, “Quiver River,” is the story of a youngster’s experiences on his grandparent’s farm. The story is narrated by that youngster at age 10. These childhood memories of family and life on the farm with loving grandparents spin enchantingly from the pages of Henderson’s self-published novel.
As soon as he can after school’s out in Belzoni, Henderson goes to spend the summer on the Quiver River farm, where he chops cotton, goes fishing, gets his first spotted pup, rambles through the woods and fields, gobbles his grandmother’s delicious cooking, and in time helps pick cotton and ready it for ginning. Joy of joys: Granddaddy Miles gets the $500 prize for bringing the first bale to the gin in Leflore County. The Hendersons also take part in cold weather hog killing days on the farm and other cherished old times such as when Paul’s father takes him to his first Ole Miss football game. Highly recommended.
