About this Book:

Growing up in a small Kansas town during WWII; watching 5 brothers "go to war," and one of them not return and while living in a time when adults were totally preoccupied with "the war effort" and not "the children," (as today), was exciting, terrifying, confusing, and often "fun." The author tells a very personal story without glorifying or whitewashing himself, events, or others.

About the Author:

Don Carriker is a retired educator holding a Ph.D. and is currently a self-employed paralegal. A few selectons from his memoir were well-received as columns in his hometown newspaper. His sensitivity as a child and memory for long-ago people and events have been noted by others.

Book Review:

Dr. Carriker's words bring the experience of childhood to life in a way reminiscent of William Saroyan's "The Human Comedy." Both authors tell of WWII through the eyes of a "little brother" who see's swirling, perilous, yet exciting events. Both watch a favorite "big brother" go to war and never return. Carriker has brought a vibrant vocabulary to the task of describing his hometown and its characters in an age when PC were just two letters in the alphabet.
