About this Book:

Imagine selling all your worldly belongings to pay off your debts, and taking off on a round the world adventure, armed only with a second hand laptop, a cheap digital camera, a sense of adventure and a sturdy pair of walking boots. That's what Steve Savage did, when he left his home in Australia to spend five months wandering the highways and biways of North America. These are his stories.

About the Author:

The stories in this book are gathered from the author’s three trips around Canada and the United States, in 1992, 1994 and his most recent hitchhiking adventure in the summer and autumn of 2003. The writing of the earlier stories was begun while Steve was volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel in 1996, and completed back home in Australia the next year. The book itself sprang to life in 2003, as a bunch of furtively scrawled notes on a wad of McDonald’s napkins in London, Ontario. (That’s in Canada!) It evolved into something resembling a book as the author continued his fifteen thousand mile walkabout around North America. Over the months of winter, in a small loft space above a garage in a charming village in southern England, the chapters grew and multiplied. The editing process took place in a series of budget hotel rooms and ‘pensions’ around Morocco, into the Sahara Desert and on the tables of numerous sidewalk cafes and ‘salons-de-the’ across the country.

Book Review:

Steve Savage is a manic, resourceful, and insatiably curious traveler. His willingness to let the winds of fate pick him up and carry him in new directions shine through in Everywhere but Missouri Mate! This woven collection of stories... illustrates journeys that few of us have the guts to take ourselves. Along the way, Savage shows us that relying on a network of friends, kind strangers, and newfound employers to enable endless wandering isn't such a crazy idea after all. For the person with an open mind and an open intinerary, the result is a long list of adventures. An entertaining and enlightening read. Tim Leffel author, The World's Cheapest Destinations
