Dorothy's background is Irish although her maternal ancestors came to the United States about the time the Pilgrims arived. She was raised Methodist but converted to Catholicism much to the disapointment of her parents. Dorothy went on to raise 10 children, many whom earned college degrees, on a dairy farm. The children spent their summers doing lots of 4-H projects and helping on the farm.
