About this Book:

"Character Education with Chess" is a book for parents and educators, explaining how chess can be used effectively and easily to teach values and skills to young people. Drawing from Viktor Frankl's approach to therapy as a way of helping people discover and fulfill the unique meaning in their lives, the King in chess symbolizes life and its meaning. The other pieces are symbols for various human qualities and talents that need to be refined and utilized in the service of the King.

Roumen Bezergianov is a psychotherapist working with troubled youth in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born in Bulgaria in 1976 and immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. "Character Education with Chess" is his first book, based on his use of the ancient game as a therapy tool. He relies on psychological and philosophical symbolism of the game and its pieces, story-telling and conversations that spring from such symbolism, to help young people clarify their values and build motivation for a meaningful life.

Book Review:
"This book is wonderful! The juxtaposition of chess and psychology is fascinating, insightful and inspiring. I found myself taking notes while reading to remember key points. When I was finished, I had a page and half of notes and quotes! I look forward to reading this book again to make sure I didn't miss anything, and to solidify the thoughts and ideas in my mind. That is the mark of a good book to me, one that I would read again. You do not need to be a chess player or even know how to play chess to read this."
John Herron, chess teacher and author of "Total Chess"
