Born in 354 AD in Tagaste (a city in what is today called Algeria) to a devoutly Christian mother (later to be known as Saint Monica) and a pagan father, Aurelius Augustinus was al- ways known as a man of intelligence and a gifted writer. His early life though was spent pursuing worldly success and devoted to ever changing secular causes. It was not until his 30’s, when he read the works of the bishop of Milan (later to be known as Saint Ambrose) and the neoplatonistic Philo- sophers, that he was able to intel- lectually justify a faith in and a life dedicated to God. At age 37, he was ordained into the priesthood. He spent the last 36 years of his life serving as the bishop of Hippo.
Today he is best known as Saint Augustine of Hippo.
