About this Book:
Who were the pioneers who settled the wild and uninhabited forests in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in early 1800s? This book uses historical sources and personal recollections to tell of the farmers and millers and loggers and miners and merchants who settled the area. It tells the genealogical background of the pioneers, some of whose descendants are still living where their ancestors put down roots nearly 200 years ago. It tells about some truly remarkable people such as the country doctor who delivered 2000 babies without one case of septicemia, and a “renaissance woman” who was a writer, florist and taxidermist of exceptional ability. These early citizens and their neighbors are worthy of remembrance.

The reader will be surprised at the wealth of information in the book, from details about the migration of its residents to the cultural and economic contributions of those who settled this small town and helped build its civic buildings, worked in such businesses as the hairpin factory and prize-winning creamery. Dave Johnson's barber shop, Fred Hoy's sawmill, Harold Moore's gas station, and many more are described in this fascinating and valuable record of Brainardsville's long history.
