My place of birth is the seaport of Odessa, Ukraine, the shores of the Black Sea. From childhood I was spending days and midnights near the sea idolizing it. In the darkness the seawater was full of phosphorescence and reminded me of a bride's train.
I treated it as a girl, kissing the surface of the seawater, diving and touching the bottom of the sand as if embracing the whole sea. On days when for some reasons I couldn't be on the beach and whisper to the seawater; I would apologize for that.
My memories of thirty-one years at sea are captured in these stories about whale hunting, foreign ports, cruise liners, and sea captains. Nowhere else can you find such stories.

Among Whales and Whalers is an excellent collection of stories and historical moments, written from the perspective of one living the events.
This memoir is an insider's look at the life of those who live at sea. It reflects a love for the sea and for seamanship. Stories from "inside" Russia are rare, and Fyodor's command of the English language makes him uniquely capable of bringing us a part of history that is otherwise lost in the west.
