About this Book:

Ralph, a fledgling osprey, decides to winter with his grandfather on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Unlike most osprey who migrate to South America he decides to stick around since he was so reluctant to leave his nest when his siblings began to fly. The story takes place during the centennial celebration of the Wright Brothers' first flight. Ralph's grandfather tells the story of their first flight and takes Ralph to the Wright Brothers' Monument to witness for himself how advanced men have become with flying. Ralph realizes that he too struggled with flight but really had it easy compared to mankind. Watercolor illustrations embellish an often told story and make it a creative way to teach one of the greatest moments in history.

About the Author:

Sue Waters was a school librarian and always passionate about children's books. She lives on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where she observed an osprey nest and became inspired to write the stories of Ralph. Her sister, Pat Deckert, illustrated the book with beautiful watercolors. She is an art teacher at a school for children with special needs in the DC area. This collaboration was inspired by their parents and was a true labor of love.

Book Review:

"Reluctant Ralph Learns about the Wright Brothers" is a great story that not only entertains but also contains accurate historical information. The story begins on an osprey nest located beside Roanoke Island, North Carolina, part of the Outer Banks. A fledgling bird is nesting with his grandfather for the winter instead of migrating to South America with his family. A great gust of wind and a loud burst of sound interrupt their peaceful nesting. As it turns out, all of this commotion has been caused by a helicopter that has just arrived on the Outer Banks for the centennial celebration of the Wright Brothers' flight. The story of the historical event is related by their great aunt Fanny Agnes who gives a "bird's eye" account of the flights. It book ends with Ralph realizing that there is an aircraft named after them, the Marine Osprey. This picture book integrates literature, science and social social studies in an entertaining and colorful way.
