Mariette immigrated in 1951 to Canada with her parents and one brother. This decision was made after the family endured the second World War and afterwards stared in the face of deceit, that of a trusted landlord. When the trip to Canada was a dismal failure, the family returned to Belgium after only two months.
In 1953 they immigrated to the United Sates and fared better. Mariette celebrated her 17th birtday on the Ryndam, a Dutch vessel, pictured on the cover. There were many tribulations ahead. Now the only surviver of the foursome who made it to America, this is her story.

Mariette Smith, was born Mariette Six in Ostend Belgium on September 11th 1936.
She has two daughters, Christine and Katherine and three granddaughters, Brandie, Sarah and Lillie.
