Weisser Park Youth Center Maat Youth Group is a rites of passage experience for high school youth involving history, creative writing and studio recording. The youth studied the history of the Middle Passage and went through a reenactment of enslaved Africans kidnapping, bondage, isolation, export and auctioning process. They also found out their ancestral heritage through mitochondrial DNA testing by African Ancestry and received African names during an African naming ceremony. Maat Youth Group wrote poetry and songs to reflect their teachings and experience.
