The story is set in a small historic town along the Blue Ridge Mountains where the hills still echo the footsteps of Daniel Boone, Over Mountain Men, and “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy.” Children there grow up hearing stories about ghosts who walk the streets and haunt the old Tavern, Martha Washington Inn and many of the beautiful homes along the brick and shaded sidewalks. Seen through the eyes of a young girl, the book takes you on a journey through much of Abingdon’s history, and gives insight into the resilience of an ordinary poor family of a region whose people contributed much to the development of this nation.

About the Author:

The author grew up in Abingdon VA the youngest member of a large family. Her father left the home when she was six years old, and her mother held a full time job which gave her and her sister a lot of freedom to explore the historic little town that she loves.

I have lived in Abingdon my entire life, yet I learned a good many things from reading Beans for Breakfast. Things about the town, the region, and the resilence of poor people. I would recommend this book to everyone who lives there, or interested in visiting. This refreshing book reminds us that it doesn't take material things to make a person happy.
