About this Book:

In the summer of 2009, a 9 year-old girl decided to make a difference in the lives of homeless dogs. She chose 50 dogs that were living in the second-largest animal care facility in the United States, took their photograph and documented their journey through the shelter system. Working with the staff at the shelter, she obtained any information she could as to why they were turned in, what their experience was living in the shelter and then painfully waited to see if they would be adopted or not. 15 of these dogs were chosen to be represented in this book, which highlights the variety of breeds, ages and stories of dogs that end up in a shelter, waiting to find a new family. This story was written for kids, by a kid, who is hoping to teach others about the importance of adoption, spaying & neutering and responsible pet guardianship. It "tells it like it is" inside the walls of a very busy animal shelter, trying to take care of more than 100,000 "unwanted" animals every year.

About the Author:

Maren Bussey has been writing books about subjects that are important to her since she was 3 years old. After realizing that most kids' books feature buying pets from a pet store or from a breeder and very little information was out there for kids about how important animal shelters are, Maren decided to take on this subject as well. Growing up with a mother who works in animal welfare, Maren has a very mature understanding of topics that many adults don't even fully understand. She hopes to empower kids to make a difference in the world and educate others on causes they believe in.
