About this Book:

To celebrate the spirit of the people and programs of Goddard Riverside, we created a cookbook. Because we received so many wonderful recipes, we decided to limit this first edition of the cookbook to beverages and desserts. Our contributors wrote or told anecdotes about themselves, someone or something they most associated with a specific recipe. Each recipe serves as reminder. Reminders of home towns and native countries. Recollections of families and friends, past and present. Stories of social or economic struggles; or cultural/religious celebrations. Memories of watching a grandmother cook. Sometimes the grandmother is from Jamaica, or from New Orleans. She is the daughter of a former slave, or the grandmother to over 142 grandchildren. There are reminders of the depression, WWII food rations, segregation and immigration. And then there is the story of a woman who tried to defrost a 22- pound pig in her bathtub. The dessert cookbook is more than just a collection of recipes. It’s a collection of personal memories, experiences and relationships.

About the Author:

Goddard Riverside Community Center, a nonprofit organization in New York City, builds community and changes lives through neighborhood-based services. While concentrated in Manhattan on the Upper West Side and in Harlem, the programs reach throughout the five boroughs, bringing food, housing, educational opportunities and much more to New Yorkers in need, and enriching community life. Families benefit from early childhood and after-school programs; teens receive one-to-one counseling; homeless adults move off the streets and into secure housing; and older adults benefit from nutritious meals and social activities. In all, 27 programs support 17,600 New Yorkers.
