The character in the book is an African American girl aged eight. Her name is Sunrae Crown. She shares the different ways her natural coarse hair is treated; i.e. hot curled, straightened with a hot comb or cream straightened. It appears that her natural hair is unacceptable and is easier managed when it is straight. She is unhappy with what is done to her hair. She acepts her nature hair, because of what she learned about the texture of her hair from books on African American heritage.
