In Jacksonville he was director of the extension programs of the Southern Baptist seminaries and Stetson University.

About the Author:

F. Calvin Parker grew up under the ministry of A. W. Mathis in Tampa and served as a missionary in Japan from 1951 to 1989. His books include Jonathan Goble of Japan; The Southern Baptist Mission in Japan, 1889-1989; Precious Mother, Precious Crown; Christ in a Kimono; The Japanese Sam Patch; and Two Feet in Three Worlds.

Book Review:

This brief biography of Rev. A. W. Mathis presents him as a model student, pastor, preacher, and colleague. A diligent student, Mathis attended seminary on borrowed money and against his preacher father's wishes. Throughout his ministry he used his Greek New Testament. Mathis the pastor was a faithful curate of souls, as the author demonstrates from personal experience. Mathis the preacher achieved a rare balance in his 3,000 sermons, covering nearly all the themes found in Protestant preaching. And Mathis the colleague set a good example of active participation in ministerial alliances and church associations. This book is a tribute to a Baptist minister whom other clergy would do well to emulate.
