About this Book:

In Redneck Joyride, Darryl Halbrooks’ second collection of short fiction, he continues his strange journey between stories of the “real world” of waitresses, jugglers, retirees and young professionals with their moments of poignancy, humor, and desperation¾a world that in his first book Melange’ he called normal stories¾and those stories from his world. Halbrooks’ abnormal world is one seen through the eyes of the visual artist who is accustomed to the creation of an alternate reality.

About the Author:

Darryl Halbrooks writes and paints in Colorado and Kentucky. He is the author of two previous collections of short fiction, Mélange (2003) and Redneck Joyride (2004). His stories have appeared in SlowTrains Literary Journal, the Chaffin Journal and Dystinct Art. His visual art is included in many private and corporate collections and his work has been represented in museums and galleries in this country and abroad.

Book Review:

Normal, abnormal, it all depends who you’re standing next to . . . .as Joseph Albers was prone to point out. Hoosier, Appalachian, artist, jock - even with labels you can’t always tell who you’re with - but if you look, closely and carefully, you sure can laugh, and cry. “Joyride” is a pretty accurate description of the trip these stories evoke, and as for “redneck” you’ll have to decide, are you a “normal” person?
