Who was the shepherd left to watch the flocks the Night the angels announced the Savior's birth? Did he ever find the Messiah? Did his life-long study of Messianic prophecies lead him to Jesus? Was he there to see Jesus' miracles of healing? Or would he meet frustration in his quest time after time, finally forsaking his search to waste away in bitterness and palsy?
This compelling tale of a shepherd's quest to find the long-awaited Messiah reveals Jewish tradition and shepherding secrets, and portrays love, heartache, and redemption in Jesus' time. This riveting novel offers plausible answers to some of the "What if?" and "Who was he?" questions readers of the Gospels ask.

After being left to watch the sheep the night Jesus was born, Joel spends his life trying to catch up with the Messiah he has studied in Scripture since his youth. Joel always arrives too late to find Jesus, and eventually gives up his quest. When palsy attacks his body, only the faith of his closest friends keeps him from dying without meeting the Messiah.
