About this Book:

A journal guiding the reader to think and write about what it means to be white and privileged. What does it mean to you to be white and privileged in the United States?...Do you think you are a good person and yet don't understand issues around race and privilege?...Are you challenged by long held belief and know you need help in changing those ideas?...Would you like to be better prepared to hold a conversation with racist Uncle Charlie at Thanksgiving? People, who conscientiously work to understand prejudice around skin color, gender, ability, religion and so much more, often refer to their "journey" to understanding. This journal will at whatever point you are on your journey, guide you to spend time each week for the next year reflecting and writing based on the questions presented. Some of you will be able to use this on your own. Some of you may want to find an ally for support, or explore the Resources section to help you develop your understanding. You may want to start a group using this journal as a guide.

About the Author:

Tom Schweizer is a 66-year-old white male born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. After a 17-year career in the business world, he served as a not-for-profit executive, consultant and coach, specializing in board and staff development, strategic planning, and fund raising. In 1992, Tom actively began to study and learn about diversity and inclusion. Since that time, he facilitated hundreds of workshops and programs. After extensive training in 2014, The King Center certified him as a Nonviolence 365 Ambassador. Now retired, he focuses on ways to develop understanding of race and white privilege through workshops, writing and speaking engagements.

Book Review:

It is frightfully easy for white U.S. citizens to go day after day without thinking about racial bias and impacts. Meanwhile, our brothers and sisters of color must consider and navigate it every minute of every day. This journal is an outstanding tool to cultivate racial awareness by posing the questions white people are not posing to one another in everyday conversation. May the disciplined discovery it offers lead you to places you never imagined, both in your heart and mind, as well as out in the world.
