About this Book:

"Americanization of the Family Barn" is for people who love old barns: "barnpeople." young and old, who would like to know a little more about the grand, old structures that dominate the barnyard. Distinguishing features of barns are described and can be used as a guide in identifying the different styles of barns across the countryside. It is hoped the more that is known about these historic agricultural icons of our great country, the more family barns will be saved for future generations.

About the Author:

Being the tomboy in the family, Pamela Whitney Gray, The Barn Consultant, has spent most of her time in the barn with her Dad, Charles W. Whitney. Over her lifetime she has played in, worked in, and in general enjoyed being in a barn. During the last years of her dad's life she had the pleasure of being his chauffeur, ‘go-fer,' and main ‘right-hand-man.' It is from him that she learned many of the traditions and ways of the past, and the workings of the barn from the inside out. She hopes that by sharing her interest and enthusiasm in barns and ‘barnpeople' that more of the historical agricultural icons of our great nation, The Family Barn, will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Book Review:

"Americanization of the Family Barn" is a brief history of the many European cultural influences on barns, detailing and identifying features of early English, German, Scottish, and Dutch timber frame construction. It discusses how the design of the family barn was impacted by environment, social, and political events. An overview of the five main barn types, compares the requirements for labor, board feet of timber, tools, hardware, and technical knowledge. This journey will illustrate how and why barns evolved from primitive, temporary structures for survival in the wilderness, to modern barns of the twenty-first century.
