About this Book:

This book is based on stories my grandmother used to tell me about her life. I questioned and listened to the answers. In her retelling of the stories, I could see the tears of painful struggles she tried desperately to hide. I felt that I must tell her story. I must tell of her courage and her survival of those times. I promised that I would not write it until her death. Mama, I kept my promise to you. Etha Gray

About the Author:

Etha Gray has been writing all of her life. She writes and produces plays and publishes books. She is the mother of five children, 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. But this great-grandmother is constantly on the move with poetry readings and still producing plays which she has done for 20 years.

Book Review:

Etha and I talked about her background as a slave descendant and my background as the great-great grandson of one of the largest slave owners in Texas. I decided I must read the book. As I read the first couple of chapters, I came to believe that the preponderance of this story is true and became thoroughly enthralled with reading it. The story begins before the Civil War. The reader will experience the trials, tribulations, and blessings of the King family. Mac made a life with his family as a share cropper in the Brazos River Bottom near Bryan, Texas. They struggled to raise their large growing family. Mac is challenged to right a wrong, and as a result kills two white men. He is eventually arrested, but is lynched on the way to town. Through a strange twist of fate, he survives the lynching and returns to his family. – Bob Crider – Historian – Anthropologist.
