About this Book: |
|
Price's Missouri Expedition of 1864 started out with high hopes of disrupting the Union war effort. But before the Confederates could threaten St. Louis, Price had to deal with the small Union garrison inside Ft. Davidson near Pilot Knob, MO. On the afternoon of September 27, 1864, Price launched a massive assault against the tiny garrison, with disastrous results for the Confederates. The Battle of Pilot Knob Staff Ride and Battlefield Tour Guide is a comprehensive guide to all the sites associated with the Battle of Pilot Knob. Inside this guide you will find a description of the strategic setting in the summer of 1864, an analysis of the opposing armies, and an excellent narrative of the battle. The heart of the book is the tour itself. Each stop on the tour is described in detail, complete with actions at that stop, teaching points, discussion questions, and vignettes written by actual battle participants. Any group or individual with an interest in history or the Civil War will love this book.

The Battle of Pilot Knob, Missouri, is one of the many small but significant actions fought during the closing months of the Civil War. The battle was the first major engagement of Major General Sterling Price's 1864 Missouri Expedition. Some historian feel that if it were not for the stunning Union victory at Pilot Knob, Price's Confederates might have been able to capture St. Louis, upsetting Union war plans and possibly bringing foreign recognition to the Confederacy. In the Battle of Pilot Knob Staff Ride and Battlefield Tour Guide, Douglas L. Gifford does a masterful job leading the reader through the significant events of the battle. The tour guide and directions are easy to understand, even by someone who is not an expert on the Civil War. With this guide, any individual or group can tour the Pilot Knob battlefield and truly understand what happened there. Military and school groups in particular will find this guide a useful tool. Even Civil War and history buffs who don't intend to visit the Pilot Knob battlefield will find the book an interesting read.
