About this Book: |
When Luther Phillips was growing up in rural Kentucky during the depression, he couldn't imagine how his life journey would unfold. World events taking place on the far side of the globe made a direct impact on the simple life of his childhood. The country boy who attended a one room school and didn't like geography celebrated his 21st birthday aboard a troop ship, sailing toward far away Africa and Italy. This book is a first person account of his life journey; growing up in the hills of Kentucky; serving in World War II in the Army's 34th Infantry Division, the Red Bulls; and raising a family in Dayton, Ohio during the 1950's and 1960's.

Book Review: |
In “One Red Bull's Life Journey” we meet Luther Phillips, a country boy growing up in the hills of Kentucky and follow his amazing journey of more than eight decades. In a first person account Phillips shares the fun and hardships of living on the family farm with eight siblings. His education in a one room school and his stories of delivering mail on horseback are priceless early Americana. In World War II he becomes a member of the 34th Infantry Division, the Red Bulls, and is wounded three times during the Italian Campaign. In reliving his combat days he remains positive and shares a glimmer of humor from the darkest hours. Post-war, Phillips became a machinist with General Motors in Dayton, Ohio and worked long hours to provide for his wife and three children. He retired after 35 years and shares with readers the rewards of a long life as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A memorable trip to the World War II Memorial with Honor Flight is a fitting conclusion to his journey.
