About this Book: |
|
A gripping portrayal of ten years of turmoil from the dictatorship of Hitler's Third Reich to the democracy of the German Federal Republic.
A young boy tells the story of his life during these turbulent years. To escape from the aerial bombardments of the Ruhr Basin he and his family move from his still intact Mulheim-Ruhr to Waldenburg in Silesia in the East of Germany. Towards the end of the war he finds his way back to his bombed out home town. Destruction, hunger, despair. Only very gradually the hope for a better future begins to replace the doom of mere survival. The teen ager experiences a new, albeit very different, life in the new democracy. The end of the book finds him on a bicycle trip through his "shattered" country The historical facts of those years are woven into the boy's personal experiences; and the author relives the epochal changes looking back once more with the insight of a life time.

About the Author: |
|
Jorg Jansen was born 1930 in Mulheim on the southern flank of the Ruhr Basin. He lived there until 1951, studied electrical engineering in Aachen, and taught in Aachen, Loughborough (UK) and Santiago (Chile). In 1960 he went to the US for one year to explore the then far advanced technologies of this country. Forty eight years later and still in the US after an exciting career in engineering research and development he lives now with his wife Brigit in retirement in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He wrote this book to remind his family, friends and in particular all young people that war has no mercy and in its blindness destroys the lives of civilians and soldiers alike.
