Anton joins the mass emigrants from Eastern Europe to American in search of a better future. He has read the newspapers and brochures advertising the West as the land of opportunity. He spends his life searching for these often elusive dreams while homesteading, railroading, and finally laboring as a shoemaker. Anton and his wife, Frantiska, who would rather have remained in Bohemia, do their best to fulfill the promises of a new land.

Jan Cerney is a retired teacher. She has self published one other book, The Prairie Remembers, about her South Dakota homesteading grandparents. She has written two Regional histories for Arcadia Publishing, entitled Badlands National Park and Mitchell's Corn Palace.
