About this Book: |
“[I]n order that the masses themselves may not guess what they are about we further distract them with amusements, games, pastimes, passions, people’s palaces…Soon we shall begin through the press to propose competitions in arts, in sport of all kinds these interests will finally distract their minds from question in which we should find ourselves compelled to oppose them. Growing more and more disaccustomed to reflect and form any opinions of their own, people will begin to talk in the same tone as we, because we alone shall be offering them new directions for thought…”
The essence of this quote, regardless of its author, undoubtedly reflects a powerful force in American society. The Sport of Distraction proposes analysis in the way of exposing the elements in society—both mechanisms and factions—that allow the energy of this passage to live and breathe within the culture, as well as benefit from its’ existence.

About the Author: |
Daniel R. Garcia is a self-educated, independent thinker who after an 11-year military career has developed an outlook on American society that's best described as "against the grain". The name of his publishing company is Contral Grano, which is Spanish for, you guessed it, "Against the Grain". The Sport of Distraction is Daniel's first published work, but by no means will it be his last.

Book Review: |
The Sport of Distraction can best be described by the book's subtitle, "Indentifying the Beneficiaries of a Dumbed-Down Society & the Strategies Used to Develop It". At the outset, the value that has been placed upon in sport in society is reviewed. From there, a blueprint as to how the industry of sport and the entertainment industry in general have come to dominate American culture is detailed and dissected. The body of work predominantely consists of analogies of, and parallels between, sport and politics in the hopes of exposing the apathetic and the misinformed to new perspectives, divorced from Democratic & Republican party labels, as to exactly what is going on around them. The author's perspective is rooted in unadulterated truth, non-partisanship, and has no affiliation with any organization.
